Waxing is one of those classic services that has stood the test of time for a reason. It removes hair from the root, so your skin stays smooth longer than shaving, and many people notice that with consistent appointments hair can start to grow back softer, finer, and a little more sparse over time. Another bonus of sticking to a schedule is that waxing often feels easier as the hair becomes weaker with repeat removal.
At Hilltop, we really care about how your skin feels during and after your appointment, which is why we choose products thoughtfully. We use Bushbalm, a Canadian brand with a skin first mindset. Their professional hard wax is designed with sensitive areas in mind and avoids a lot of the unnecessary extras that can irritate the skin, so the experience is as gentle and comfortable as possible.
If you are brand new to waxing, we will walk you through what to expect and help you feel at ease. If you are a regular, we will keep things consistent, comfortable, and smooth. Our goal is simple, great results in a relaxed, welcoming space where you feel taken care of.
Waxing what to expect:
It involves the use of wax and strips applied in the direction of one’s hair growth and then removed against the natural direction of growth. The hair is taken from the root, which is more effective than shaving. Waxing your hair will keep you hairless for approximately 3-5 weeks. Here at Hilltop we use both hard and soft wax, so that we have the best of both protocols to ensure a silky smooth finish. Soft wax is typically better for larger areas such as legs and arms. Hard wax is known to be best used for sensitive areas such as brazilians and underarms.
How to prepare for my appointment
- Please have a minimum of 2-3 weeks of hair growth after shaving. This allows for all cycles of hair growth to be grown out so you will get the best wax possible. The hair needs to be 1/4 to 1/2 inch long
- Exfoliate your skin 48 hours prior to your appt.
- Avoid caffeine the day of your wax. Caffeine restricts blood vessels so skin does not get as much blood flow; which in turn will increase sensitivity.
- Avoid waxing just before your period when your skin may be more sensitive.
Taking an Ibuprofen 30 minutes before your wax will help with sensitivity and inflammation.
Aftercare Protocol | The Do’s & Don’t of waxing/sugaring
Do’s
- Keep all areas clean and fresh after hair removal. Your skin is open and more prone to infection.
- Once your skin feels back to normal(2+ days) begin to exfoliate the area to ensure hairs can get through. This will help alleviate the possibility of ingrown hairs. We recommend a medium grit glove with a sugar or coffee scrub.
- If you have sensitive skin we recommend trying sugaring over waxing. You can take a Tylenol/Aspirin 1 hour prior to your appt to help with comfort. Your skin is also more sensitive right before and during your period.
Don’ts within the first 24hrs
- Avoid Hot tubs, steam rooms, hot showers/baths.
- Avoid direct sunlight, sun tanning, or tanning beds.
- Don’t wear tight clothing, let your skin breathe.
- Don’t use perfumed products, harsh skin products, skin products that contain retinol or alpha hydroxy acids on waxed/sugared skin.
- Avoiding touching the area(s) where hair removal was performed.
- Work out or cause yourself to sweat. Sweat can irritate the skin causing itchiness.
AFTER 24 HOURS:
- Start a gently scrub after 3 days.
- Avoid waxing just before your period when your skin may be more sensitive.
- Don’t shave between waxing/sugaring: this would affect the hair grow cycle. If you shave between allow 10-14days after you last shave before your next sugar/wax
- Protect your body from direct sunlight using a good SPF 50+.
- Show your new hairless skin off 💜
